Which Airport to Use?
You can choose from several airports in the Los Angeles area. Your choice depends on where you are coming from, how much you want to pay, and your plans for your stay in Southern California.
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX):
This is the big one with large number of flights to choose from dozens of cities. Generally the lowest fares are to LAX. Although it's a huge airport, there are eight terminal buildings so the size is not really relevant. Traffic is the main issue for getting to Long Beach. At rush hour it takes about forty-five minutes; off-peak it takes a little bit less. A taxi to the Conference hotel costs about $50 and offers the most flexibility in routes and shortest time. The Super Shuttle to the Conference hotel costs around $25 and will usually go directly to the Long Beach area before stopping at any hotels.
Long Beach Airport (LGB):
This little airport is straight out of the 1950s. The distance from gate to baggage claim to taxi is only about 100 yards total. You'll rarely find long lines for tickets, baggage, or security. And it's just a twenty-minute taxi ride from the airport to the Conference hotel. For West Coast travelers this is usually the airport of choice with frequent flights and good (often cheaper) fares. However, Long Beach has far fewer non-stop flights from/to the other U.S. cities than LAX and the fares can be $100-200 moreyou're really paying for convenience.
John Wayne Airport, Orange County (SNA):
This like-new, little utilized airport offers a lot of flights at reasonable prices. It is about a forty-five minute taxi ride, $60, from Long Beach depending on traffic. This airport is an attractive option if you are renting a car and/or plan to visit Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, or heading south to San Diego.
