Fun Things To Do in Memphis and the Surrounding Area

Many factors go into deciding where to hold our annual Conference. One of them is the availability of fun and interesting things for you to do when you take a break from the Conference sessions. On that count, our newest Conference location of Memphis offers a great variety of activities.

The lobby of the Peabody Memphis HotelFirst of all, there is the hotel itself. The Peabody Memphis Hotel is a living museum. The grand interior takes you back in time. The hotel is filled with shops, restaurants, and a health club.

The famous Peabody ducks make twice-daily marches from the duck house on the roof to the fountain in the lobby.

The riverfront is just two blocks from the hotel. It is a great place to take a break from conference activities. A trolley runs on a regular route through the downtown area.

From CNN: Memphis restaurants have artistic flair.

Beale StreetBeale Street and the Blues

For great live music it is hard to beat Beale Street. This historical Memphis district was and is home to great Blues musicians. On a nightly basis you can hear a variety of music in a dozen clubs. Beale street is also well-known for its many bar-b-que joints. And of course a load of souvenir shops. The area is just a two-block walk from The Peabody.

National Civil Rights MuseumNational Civil Rights Museum

The National Civil Rights Museum covers over three hundred years of the struggle for equality. The exhibits are rich in historical artifacts, photographs, films, and information. The modern museum is built into the façade of the Lorraine Motel where Martin Luther King was assassinated. The museum is an easy fifteen minute ride from the Peabody Hotel on the streetcar.

Sun Records

The tiny studio of Sun Records was the launching pad for the careers of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis. The look and feel of the studio has been preserved from the its 1950s origins. An informative tour takes you through the origins of rock and roll with a display of recording equipment, original records, and photographs. The studio is a five-minute taxi ride from the Peabody.

GracelandGraceland

Memphis was the home town of Elvis Presley. A visit to Graceland is fun whether or not you are an Elvis fan. His larger than life persona is reflected in the extravanganza that is Graceland. You can tour his home, car collection, costumes, and airplanes. The exhibits take you into the styles of the sixties and seventies. Graceland is just a short ride from the Memphis airport.

Gibson Guitar Factory Tour

Whether you play the guitar or not, the tour of the Gibson factory is really interesting. You get to see how guitars are crafted and learn some of the history of guitar-making. The Gibson tour is just a short walk from The Peabody Hotel.
